What's the difference between Debt Consolidation and Debt Settlement?
There's a big difference between the two programs. In a traditional debt consolidation or creditor counseling program, you repay your debts in full usually through a Non-Profit consumer credit counseling agency, it's just at a reduced interest rate.

The Truth About Not for Profit Debt Consolidation.

Many people have the wrong impression of the term Non-Profit debt consolidation. People assume there are no fees when it comes to dealing with a not for profit credit counseling agency. The truth is these agencies aren't funded by the government therefore in order to stay in business they must charge some sort of fee. The term Non-Profit only means that the controlling members and directors have a salary cap and can't make over a particular amount of money each year.

In a for profit Debt Settlement program, you'll actually end up paying less than you would with a non-profit credit counseling program. Let me give you an example. Let's say you have a just one credit card (Chase and you owe $15,000 with a 19% APR) that you're enrolling into a traditional debt consolidation plan.

Credit Card Debt Consolidation can lower your APR to 6%, and chase requires a 3% payment factor, meaning they want 3% of your balance as the monthly payment in the CC program, which equals $455. Currently your payment is some where around $400, so we may very well increase your payment. With your current interest rate of 19% and if you're only making the minimum monthly payments, it will take you 358 payments (30 years) and in total you'll pay $36, 398.52 by the time you get paid off, that's almost triple what you owe. Credit Solutions.

In the credit counseling program at 6% you'll pay $16,715.00 (plus the monthly fee charged depending on the state that you reside in) and you'll be done in about 43 months (3.57 years). Clearly a much better alternative to your current payment plan.

The Truth About Debt Settlement.

Option 2 would be the Debt Settlement program. Your monthly payment would be $387.50 on a 24 month program (2 years) and in total you'd pay $9,300.00. What that includes is paying off the debt at approximately 40% plus our fee (20% of your debt amount) that we charge after we settle your debt as well as our 3rd party payment processor charges $12.50 monthly. The downside to this program is it will negatively effect your credit score since your settling for less than what you owe.

So you need to ask yourself, what's more important to me? The lower monthly payment ($387 vs. $455) and getting out of debt faster (24 months vs. 43 months) or keeping my credit decent standings. Most people say both. Unfortunately you can't have it both ways, at least not in the beginning. If you choose option 2, at least you have a more manageable monthly payment and will be debt free sooner. Which also means that you can begin rebuilding your credit score faster as well. The way we look at it is, if you're not planning on buying a house in the next 2 years, what do you really need credit for? The only reason to have good credit is to get a loan or another credit card which only puts you further into debt. Why not just get out of debt once and for all, and then when you complete the program, you'll actually have extra money each month to be able to purchase things that you normally would with your credit cards.
